In a few weeks, my son will fly home from college. I have written this First Time Air Travel Guide just for him. Although this will not be his first flight, his wonderful mom has always taken care of all the important safety issues and airport navigation. This guide is for those who are new to air travel, or don’t enjoy it but have to do so occasionally.
Check local airport arrival recommendations if you are traveling for the very first time during Thanksgiving or Christmas holidays. This is especially important for those who will be arriving the day before and Sunday following Thanksgiving. Holiday lines are even longer when you travel by air. When traveling on a busy day, we arrive at least three hours before our flight (though we really try to avoid holiday air travel).
First Time Air Travel Guide
Pack Light. Pack light. Traveling is easier when you don’t have to worry about managing your luggage. It’s common sense, right? Simplicify your entire wardrobe, even shoes. Once you think you have minimized everything, go through it again. Only take what you need. Most air travelers will be able to purchase shampoo, sunscreen, and other items on their destination. You can send gifts in advance (or order online to have them delivered to friends or family at your destination) if you are traveling over the holidays. Count your bags before you leave for the airport. This includes camera bags, purses, computers, and luggage.
Check-in online. Online check-in is usually allowed up to 24 hours prior to the flight. Print the eTicket that appears when you check-in online and bring it with you. You will not have to wait in line at the airport to check in. You will still need to check in at the airport if you are checking baggage (that is luggage that’s too big to take on board with you). However, you can save time by checking in online. Southwest Airlines passengers: Check in 24 hours before your flight for the best seats. If you are traveling with children under five years old or with someone who has special needs, priority boarding will still be given.
Be prepared for the security check. To get through security faster, make sure you have your ticket with ID on hand. Slip-on shoes are easy to remove and put back on when handling bags. If you want to screen your computer, it must be removed from its case and placed into a bucket. Make sure that the computer is easy to access without spilling anything else. Lastly, be sure to understand the rules regarding liquids. You can avoid this hassle if you pack liquids into ziploc bags and check your luggage. Follow TSA guidelines if you have to carry liquids. TSA considers toothpaste to be a liquid.
Navigate the airport confidently. The first time travelers to the airport often appear confused. This is a sign for pickpockets. Packing light (the first tip), because you will be less stressed. Walk confidently. Ask airport staff for help if you need it. Never leave your luggage. Instead of carrying a purse, I carry a laptop messenger. I can fit all my electronics in the bag, and there is a pocket that slides into place for my ID and airline ticket. I carry my luggage in a backpack so it is easy to move through the crowds. Be aware. Be aware. Be aware.
Check the location of connecting flights. While you might expect your connecting flight at one gate, this may not be the case. Confirm the location of your next flight after disembarking. Avoid the bathroom when you disembark. It will be crowded. To avoid long lines, go to the next area of the gate. Consult the screens at your second gate to confirm the flight departure time.
Don’t rush to the baggage claim when retrieving your luggage. You won’t have to worry about your checked luggage. Double-check your luggage before leaving the airport. Report it calmly if you’re one of those unfortunate few who have lost luggage. The employees who handle lost luggage are the ones to blame. But remember that they didn’t lose your luggage. It doesn’t take much to show them a little kindness! Before leaving the airport, make sure that you have exactly the same amount of luggage as you had brought.
Relax. Be alert to your surroundings. Pack lightly. Arrive early. Travel with confidence by following this simple guide for first-time air travelers.
